Blakey Johnston – Apnea Survival Ambassador Profile

This special Cronulla Surf Apnea course brings together two highly experienced watermen and coaches for a powerful one-day immersive training designed to change the way you respond to pressure in the ocean and in life.

Facilitated by Apnea Survival creator Jason Rice alongside Cronulla local and world-record-holding surfer Blakey Johnston, this course combines breathing, breath hold training, and controlled stress exposure to develop calm, clarity, resilience, and functional decision-making when things become intense.

Blakey Johnston is renowned not only for his incredible endurance achievements in the surf, including his world record-breaking 40-hour surf session, but also for his commitment to mental health advocacy, mindset training, and helping people develop the tools to perform under pressure. Combined with Jason Rice’s decades of operational first response, rescue, breath control and stress exposure training experience, this course delivers a unique blend of practical ocean knowledge, physiology, psychology, and lived experience.

Developed through years of research, experimentation, and real-world application, the Surf Apnea course draws from the knowledge of surfers, freedivers, first responders, military operators, and elite performers from around the world. The result is a highly refined system focused on what actually matters when dealing with high-stress aquatic situations such as surfing hold downs, heavy wipeouts, long swims, impact zone stress, and the rising panic associated with breath deprivation.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of the breath hold journey and what occurs physiologically and psychologically when the body is placed under pressure on a single breath. Through both theory and pool-based practical drills, you will learn how to remain calm, organised, and effective rather than reactive and overwhelmed.

While Surf Apnea has become globally recognised within the surfing community, the tools taught throughout the course extend far beyond the ocean. The breathing and stress management techniques developed during the training can positively influence performance, recovery, emotional regulation, self-awareness, focus, nervous system control, and overall resilience in everyday life.

The course is suitable for everyone from complete beginners through to experienced chargers and water athletes. Every drill is scalable to the individual, allowing participants to safely explore their current limits while developing greater confidence and control.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the Dive Response
  • The urge to breathe and CO₂ tolerance
  • Nervous system regulation and stress response
  • Functional breathing and recovery techniques
  • Relaxation and breath control methods
  • Static and dynamic apnea training principles
  • Safe breath hold training protocols
  • Pool-based drills designed to simulate pressure and develop composure under load
  • Practical tools for managing hold downs and stressful situations in the water

At its core, Surf Apnea is about developing self-awareness and self-control under pressure.
Learning to breathe better.
Think clearer.
Stay calmer.
And become harder to shake when the ocean — or life — turns chaotic
