What is Apnea Survival?
Apnea Survival is a training methodology and education system focused on improving breath-hold capacity, stress resilience, and self-mastery through underwater breath-hold, cold water immersion, and elemental training principles.
Who is Apnea Survival for?
Anyone seeking to improve breath control, manage stress, enhance performance, or explore their physical and mental limits. Whether surfers, athletes, or any individuals interested in personal development and improving nervous system regulation.
What is the Surf Apnea course?
Our Surf Apnea course is a trademarked, globally recognised program teaching surfers how to safely enhance their breath hold during wipeouts, hold-downs, and challenging ocean conditions.
Do I need to be an experienced swimmer?
Basic swimming ability is recommended, but our courses are designed to safely train people of varying skill levels. Safety and progression are always prioritised.
Do I need to be a surfer to join a Surf Apnea course?
No. While the course is designed with surfers in mind, anyone can benefit from learning breath-hold techniques and stress management in the water.
What is cold water immersion (CWI) training?
CWI involves controlled exposure to cold water, enhancing circulation, stress tolerance, recovery, and mental clarity. It’s a key pillar of Apnea Survival training.
Is cold water immersion safe?
Yes. When conducted with suitably qualified supervision, proper progression, safety protocols, and individual monitoring. All participants are screened for health conditions.

Can women benefit from Apnea Survival courses?
Absolutely! Women gain improved breath control, nervous system regulation, stress control, hormonal balance, mental clarity, and overall fitness. Courses are inclusive and adaptive to all participants.
Do you teach advanced freediving techniques?
While we do not offer competitive freediving certifications, our courses cover everything from breath-hold mechanics, relaxation techniques, and advanced stress management techniques that are relevant to freediving. Think of it as a freediving course without equalisation and greater focus on how to manage stress and your nervous system. Many freedivers undertake our training as a compliment to their freediving training.
How long is a typical course?
Courses vary: The Surf Apnea course is typically 1 day, and instructor or advanced programs may vary from 1 day for the CWI to 2.5 days for the Breath FX elemental breathing Instructor 5 days to the full Apnea Survival elemental Instructor. Each course includes practical, hands-on training and theory sessions.
What equipment do I need?
Most courses require only swim and / or exercise wear, and towel. Some courses may require wetsuits, fins, or other specialised equipment.
How does breath-hold training improve everyday life?
Breath-hold training teaches calm under pressure, enhanced focus, emotional regulation, and improved recovery from physical and mental stress.
Can Apnea Survival help with anxiety or stress?
Yes indeed! Breath-hold, breathing, cold water immersion and deliberate heat exposure training all improve stress tolerance, emotional regulation, and self-awareness, which can translate to daily life.
Are there any age limits for training?
Participants typically range from teens (with parental consent) to adults. Individual assessment ensures safety and suitability. A minimum age of 18 years applies to all instructor certifications. Under 18s can attend non certifying workshops like the Surf Apnea 1 day course or the Breath Control training 2 day course but must be accompanied by a consenting and participating parent or guardian who is over the age of 18 years.
Do I need to be fit to participate?
A reasonable level of fitness helps, but courses are adaptable for various levels. Mental focus, calmness, and willingness to learn are equally important.
Can I take the course if I have medical conditions?
We recommend consulting a doctor before participation if you have cardiovascular, respiratory, or other serious health conditions that is indicated in the pre-screening medical waiver you are required to complete before participating in any of our training including any online courses. Our instructors will also screen and review all participants.
Can I combine Apnea Survival with other sports or training?
Yes. Breath-hold, Breath training, cold water, heat exposure and elemental training complement surfing, swimming, triathlons, yoga, mindfulness, and any other athletic and wellness practices or vocations.

What is the “Elemental” philosophy?
The Elemental philosophy at Apnea Survival is the foundational framework that bridges nature, human physiology, breath mastery, and resilience training. It’s a holistic model built around five elemental pillars. Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Ether. Each representing a dimension of human experience and personal growth. Through integration of these elements, our training helps you develop strength, adaptability, presence, and inner intelligence.

Earth connects you to your foundation and stability. It strengthens your physical grounding, confidence, and sense of presence. In training, Earth is the root from which all resilience and inner strength grows. It teaches you to stay rooted, anchored, and resilient when life (or the ocean) becomes unpredictable.

Air is the invisible yet essential force of breath and connection. The bridge between body, mind, and spirit. Through our Breath FX and functional breathing practices, you learn to harness the power of breath to regulate your nervous system, enhance performance, deepen relaxation, and sharpen focus. Air strengthens clarity, calmness, and mental agility.

Fire represents transformation, heat, and intensity. It is embodied through practices like deliberate heat exposure and contrast training, which challenge your comfort zone and build mental toughness. Fire helps you convert stress into strength and fosters the courage to face discomfort with calm focus.

Water is the essential teacher of self-awareness, fluidity, and adaptation. It is experienced through cold water immersion, breath-hold practices, and aquatic environments, where you cultivate calm under pressure and learn the art of surrendering to the moment while retaining control. Water reveals your capacity to adapt and thrive in changing conditions.

Ether is the element of integration, intuition, and holistic being. It is the subtle space in which all the other elements come together. The place of awareness, wisdom, and inner intelligence. In training, Ether represents self-actualisation: the ability to respond to life’s challenges with calmness, presence, and coherence.
How do I progress safely in breath-hold training?
Through structured exercises, gradual exposure, relaxation techniques, and competent supervision. We never encourage pushing beyond safe limits and we advise to never train alone in the water.
What is the “dive reflex”?
The dive response is a natural response that all mammals and diving animals have. It slows the heart rate, redirects blood to vital organs, and helps us conserve oxygen during breath-hold or immersion.
How do I prepare for a course?
We provide pre-course guidance, including basic breath awareness, hydration, nutrition, and mindset preparation for safe and effective learning.
